Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for December 2019 –Historic Smithfield.
In 1774, Smithfield was the Monticello of the Frontier. It linked the great Wilderness to the heart of the American Revolution, and helped form a new nation. It produced a family of 21 governors and 73 legislators. It contributed to the founding of 21 institutions of higher learning, including Virginia Tech.
Today, Smithfield tells the stories of all those who lived here, including a large enslaved community and native peoples. Smithfield shares their values. Liberty. Courage. Education. Philanthropy. Integrity. Perseverance. It holds an incredible collection of artifacts documenting the American experience, including pieces from Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
Historic Smithfield is open to the public April through November, and has special programming throughout the year. With its state-of-the art pavilion, Smithfield also serves as the perfect setting for meetings, reunions, and weddings.
It costs $600/day to operate Historic Smithfield and produce its vital programming. Please consider joining Smithfield in a charitable gift today.
