Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for November 2019 – The Blacksburg Regional Art Association.
BRAA (as it is commonly known) has a long history in Blacksburg. Founded in 1950, the all-volunteer organization of artists celebrates its 70th year in 2020. The Association has grown and changed through the years and is a vibrant part of the Blacksburg art scene. From its beginning as a small group of artists primarily affiliated with the university, BRAA now has a regional membership of more than 120 artists who work in media as diverse as fiber, metal, glass and stone as well as the more traditional drawing and painting media. This year BRAA moved to its new office and exhibit space in The Artful Lawyer in Blacksburg.
BRAA holds monthly luncheons that feature a member or outside speaker in the Art Spot and provide opportunities for members to share what they are doing and learn about art opportunities in the area. Each year, it sponsors artist “playdates” and workshops by local and nationally-known professional artists providing a chance for member artists to explore and grow.
Many Blacksburg businesses and public spaces participate in BRAA’s Community Gallery Program, hosting four different art exhibits by BRAA artists that add interest and beauty to their walls year-round. Reaching beyond the artist community, BRAA is a long-time partner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, planning and providing workshops by VMFA artists and art-historians for public school art classes.
BRAA partners with a variety of regional art organizations, participating in the Hahn Garden’s annual Simply Elemental art in the garden program and the New River Juried Biennial Exhibit, managed this year by BRAA and hosted in the Moss Center at Virginia Tech.
Networking is perhaps the primary benefit of membership in BRAA. The Association publishes a vibrant monthly newsletter for its members and maintains a web site and Facebook page. BRAA members relish in the opportunities to learn from each other in a supportive and fun environment..
