Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our business Member of the Month for September 2019, The Blacksburg Farmers Market. The Blacksburg Farmers Market is a local, family-friendly gathering place in downtown Blacksburg featuring farmers of locally grown produce and meats, alongside artisans of baked goods and handmade crafts. The Blacksburg Farmers Market is where you can eat locally year-round!
The Farmers Market has been around since the 1980’s but in 1996 the Town of Blacksburg and the Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg came together to build nine semi-covered brick and steel open-air structures at the edge of a public parking lot and adjacent to Roanoke Street. In 2009, The design of the current Market Square Park and its timber frame pavilions is distinctive by its simplicity and economy of means. The open-air structure in now the perfect venue for the year-round, twice weekly market, and other community events. The Market continues to attract new vendors and more shoppers.
The Blacksburg Farmers Market is Governed by the non-profit group “The Friends of the Farmers Market Inc.”. The FOFM is a 501c3 nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors and provides support to the Blacksburg Farmers Market by educating the community on the benefits of locally grown and sustainably produced food, providing development and business support on behalf of vendors, providing effective market management, and fostering a vibrant local economy and community gathering place.
Market Director Ian Littlejohn says, “The Farmers Market is simply the place to be on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We have live local music during most markets and our fabulous vendors have offerings to satisfy any taste. Whether it be the freshest locally grown produce, baked goods, hand-made crafts, or prepared food, we got you covered!”
The Market appeals to every budget, every palate, and diverse ethnicities. All vendors accept SNAP/EBT, and through our Double Value Program, SNAP customers can double the value of their benefits used up to twice weekly. Cash, debit card, and SNAP/EBT can be used at the market to purchase an array of foods that reflect the heritage of the vendors, the Blacksburg community, and the region.
