Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for April 2019-Northstar Church.
Northstar Church began in 2003 as an intentional church plant led by Bob Jackson in cooperation with the Baptist General Association of Virginia. At age 56, he was not the typical church planter. Blacksburg would provide a unique opportunity for Bob to try his hand at the church planting experience after almost 20 years of denominational service.
The story of Northstar is a dynamic one that has grown to minister to families, college students, grad students, and internationals in the New River Valley. In 2013, Northstar planted a new campus in Pulaski which continues to grow. We desire to plant additional campuses in the future.
Since its early days, Northstar has enjoyed the hospitality and kindness of the Montgomery Country Public Schools as we’ve met for the past 16 years in Blacksburg Middle School. Our strategic team began to meet in 2012, and we prioritized finding a location for Northstar to create a future ministry facility. After a lot of searching, Northstar purchased 10 acres of land on Prices Fork Road in 2014, on which we have finally (five years later) begun the process of moving dirt and construction of our new facility. This building project, known as our Immeasurably Moreproject, has been designed so that our building can be used by our community, campuses, and local businesses – as well as be an ideal home for our ministries.
At Northstar, our motto is “don’t go to church; be the church.” It’s our way of encouraging one another to remember that being a Christian is not about being attending religious services but about living out the teachings of Jesus.
We have an incredible staff team and volunteer team who make everything that we try to do happen. We have a body of people who embrace our motto, and live it out in the NRV community. From volunteering at other organizations to helping neighbors with housework, our members try to “be the church” wherever they go. Since we meet in a middle school, we have to set up all of our equipment every Sunday, and our team of volunteers is what makes that possible. Our volunteers help us so much, and we couldn’t function without them.
We meet at the Blacksburg Middle School at 3109 Price’s Fork Road every Sunday, and we have services at 9am and 11am.
If you’re looking for a church around here, we would love for you to come visit one Sunday! Stop by the welcome table and say hi!
