Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for February 2019- Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club.

The BJWC was formed in 1935 and in its early days raised money for the Blacksburg Library and founded the Blacksburg Newcomer’s Club. Currently, the BJWC has 35+ members who share a common desire to serve the community while building and enjoying lasting friendships. The club is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs which was founded in 1890 and today has nearly 80,000 members.

MOA

For the past 12 years, the BJWC has hosted an annual fundraiser called The March of Ales. The 21-and-older event provides the funding that the club uses for its many community service projects and donations throughout the year.  This fantastic evening includes beer and wine tastings, live and silent auctions, delectable food from local establishments, raffles, a DJ and dancing, and even a Hooptie Ride home in Christiansburg or Blacksburg, if you need one.

The 2019 March of Ales Parisian Mystique is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th at the German Club Manor on Southgate Drive. Tickets are $50 per person and there are a limited number of VIP tables with reserved seating for 8 for $600. Tickets are available at www.MOA2019.givesmart.com.

Our core projects include Micah’s Backpack, Bobcat Backpacks, Cornerstone and the Women’s Resource Center, the Montgomery County Christmas Store, the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, Salvation Army’s Last Minute Angels, The Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke and we offer three scholarships each year to young women who not only excel academically, but exemplify the attitude of service that we have as a club.

Cinderella

One of our favorite new projects is the Cinderella Project. Going to a High School Prom can be expensive. Together with the YMCA, the BJWC has gathered over 450 new and gently used dresses, men’s wear, shoes and accessories that have been donated and has created a boutique atmosphere where High School students can come in and pick out prom clothing. The BJWC will be at the YMCA for two more weekends, February 16-17 and March 16-17, with refreshments and giveaways to help students pick out beautiful clothes for an amazing PROM! Can’t make it on those dates? Don’t worry! The boutique is open whenever the Y is. Just ask inside.

Women who are interested in joining BJWC should like our Facebook Page, Instagram and Twitter accounts. We accept new members in the fall each year and typically have a new member social in September. We will post the event on our social media accounts to keep you up to date. Don’t be put off by the “Junior” in the name. Women of all ages are welcomed!
