Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for July 2018- Blacksburg Newcomers’ Club.
Since the 1960s, people who have made Blacksburg and the New River Valley their home have found the transition made easier by joining the Blacksburg Newcomers’ Club. We’re a non-profit social and community service organization of over 100 new and returning members serving the entire New River Valley. Our organization is open to all residents of the New River Valley, no matter how long you’ve lived here! Making new friends, becoming part of the community and providing community service in the NRV is what we’re all about.
Come visit us at a General Meeting, held monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, always free and open to the public! Our General Meetings start at 9:00am on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, September-May at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church (600 Prices Fork Rd.) Meetings include social time with coffee and breakfast, followed by a fun and informative program. Each monthly meeting features a speaker from a local Community Service Organization and members may bring needed items for donation as well. Past community service participants have included the Women’s Resource Center of the NRV, Micah’s Backpack, the NRV Interfaith Food Pantry, and many more.
Members also participate in many smaller interest group activities such as wine tasting, supper circles, book clubs, walking, cycling, and many more. Interest groups are available during the week or on weekends, and in the daytime, afternoon, and evenings…so there’s something to suit every schedule. Our biggest strength is the passion of our members, and we welcome new interest groups every year!
Every year we have two big get togethers…our Winter Brunch in December and our May End-of-the-Year Event. This past May we gathered at Glade Road Growing for a family-style meal from Tabula Rasa and drinks from Rising Silo Brewery to celebrate “Our Place in the Community.” With music, a 50/50 raffle, good foods and great conversation, we enjoyed the beauty of Blacksburg and announced our end-of-year donation to the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program and the Christmas Store.
You can find us at https://blacksburgnewcomer.wixsite.com/bbnc, on Twitter, Facebook and a wide variety of local news outlets both online and in-print. Our first meeting for the 2018-2019 season is Tuesday, September 11, 9:00 am at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church (600 Prices Fork Rd.) Membership dues are $25/household. Membership includes our monthly newsletter and participation in our interest groups. Our monthly newsletter features the activities of our Interest Groups, upcoming events, a “Member Spotlight,” and art/writing by our members.
