Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our business Member of the Month for May 2018, Shelter Alternatives.
For May 2018 the DBI member of the month business is Shelter Alternatives, Inc. Most locals recognize the name of this longtime operation in our community but did you know that this month marks their 30th year of doing business from downtown Blacksburg? The original office was located in an apartment near Progress Street in 1988. Current owner Ed Tuchler started as a carpenter on the first project that year just for a few weeks, but stayed on and eventually bought the company from former owner Eric Sallee in 2005.
Ever focused on applying building science to the design and construction process, in 2007 Tuchler also started the Energy Check division, sharing company knowledge about energy efficiency in new construction to owners of existing homes. In the decade since, Energy Check has retrofit over 300 homes in the NRV, and is now unveiling a new partnership with the Pearl certification program that offers homeowners and realtors verified data to use in showing the increased value of our upgraded homes.
Over the years, Shelter Alternatives’ projects and team have won numerous awards locally, statewide, and in the southeast US region. Still, the design-build team’s most prized reward is the repeat business they achieve by great customer service – previous clients represented over 25% of their 40 projects underway in 2017. The seasoned team of designers and field supervisors offer homeowners a detailed process with a wide universe of styles from which to create their own dream home from their vision with professional guidance to stay on their budget. Unique, well planned projects that offer comfort, durability and aesthetics will always be sought out in our community.
For 2018, Shelter Alternatives will hold a summer open house celebration to commemorate the 30th anniversary and service to the community. They still hold weekly lunchtime jam sessions in the office with local musicians that happen to be on staff or otherwise in the Shelter fold. And they will continue to embrace science with creativity and intention to improve the livability of clients’ homes.
