Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for March 2018- New Life.
New Life is a community church congregation that meets on Sundays in the heart of downtown Blacksburg on Jackson Street, nestled behind Bollo’s and the Lyric Theater. In a culture that tends to separate people politically, economically, and generationally, New Life seeks to represent what the kingdom of Jesus looks like by bringing people together from different backgrounds. Marrieds, retired, singles, grad students, and families give us the opportunity to share with and learn from each other at any phase of life. Instead of separating the ages and stages, we embrace and mix them together like a true family would.
New Life began almost 10 years ago by our sister congregation, NLCF, which focuses on students at Virginia Tech. Even though the parking isn’t ideal, we love being in downtown Blacksburg! We are a missional, interdenominational church seeking to live out our calling to follow Jesus in loving God and loving others. Our vision is to be dedicated to three practices, Believe, Become, and Bless. Most of how we seek to accomplish this vision is through smaller groups rather than church programs. However, there are a few larger opportunities to live out our calling as a church that we enjoy throughout the year.
Events like Steppin’ Out, Downtown Trick or Treating, and Winter Lights have been key festivals for us to celebrate and be a blessing to our community. We believe our God is a God who loves to party and celebrate life! At Blacksburg’s Winter Lights festival, several members chose to sing carols while we offered free S’mores and hot chocolate. Christmas movies ran on the big screen inside our building for the kids. We loved seeing both the parents, kids, and college students roasting marshmallows over the open fire pits, all while a snow machine on the roof blew snow over the crowd.
During the downtown Trick or Treating event on Halloween, we jam packed our building with candy and fun events like a Spider Web Crawl, Ghoulie Bowling, and Pumpkin Painting. It was great to see the chaos emerge in our building as hundreds of children and parents walked through each of the fun activities. Of course, handing out free Kettle corn was a benefit to the kids (and us!) as well.
We love seeking to live out our calling that God gives to His church, to be a blessing to others around us. God calls His children in Jeremiah 29:7 to “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you… for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” We love being a growing part of a great downtown Blacksburg community and want to do our part in seeing this community thrive. To Our House is one of the local non-profit organizations that we partner along with to host homeless men in our area for 2 weeks during the winter months each year. Rise Against Hunger allows us to each year go beyond our local area in feeding children from impoverished areas around the world.
Some of our smaller groups are also seeking to be a blessing in different ways. One of our members is a retired U.S. Navy officer and a certified yoga instructor, and offers the community free yoga classes on Sundays at 4:30pm. Come join us if you would like! A married couple from both India and Nepal are leading a group to welcome international students and families to Blacksburg. Others in our church have started an adventure and learning program for young girls, called American Heritage Girls. We love to see creative ways our members choose to love and serve others.
Along with our goal to be a blessing to others, our greatest calling is to follow and become more like Jesus through the work of the Spirit among us. Our greatest hope is that the blessing comes out of who we are, and who we are becoming. We desire to be a community filled with love, joy, and true peace (even amidst differences) – a community where the presence of Jesus can be found.
We would love to welcome you to our neighborhood church community! Join us on our mission in Believing God, Becoming more like Jesus, and Blessing others around us. Our worship gatherings are at 10am on Sunday mornings and have smaller groups meeting in homes throughout the week. For more info check out NewLifeNRV.org and our Facebook page.
