Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for August 2017- AARP Blacksburg Chapter.

AARP enhances the quality of life for all as we age. We champion positive social change and deliver value through advocacy, information, and service.
The chapter of AARP was organized in Blacksburg in 1975 by a group of citizens who called themselves the Liaisurees. Within a year, the group affiliated with AARP and was chartered as chapter #2613.

Blacksburg AARP welcomes members who are age 50 or more into regular membership and interested persons age 49 or younger as affiliate members. Current membership is composed of retirees from local and national agencies, U. S. Military, companies and industries, and colleges and universities. Some members remain employed in a variety of enterprises, including those who work for the town of Blacksburg. Membership in March 2016 was 306 composed of 196 households

Blacksburg AARP meets on the third Tuesday of each month, except for the months of July and August, at the Blacksburg Community Center located at 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Occasionally, these public meetings are held elsewhere as announced in the chapter newsletter that is published monthly. Each public meeting features a speaker addressing some relevant topic of interest to seniors.
The chapter increasingly is involved in community activities other than the monthly meetings. The chapter helped to launch the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Virginia Tech and continues to assist by providing content for each semester offerings. The chapter work in partnership with eight other community organizations to carry out activities resulting in the overall benefit to the community and is a member of Downtown Blacksburg, Inc.

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership at large and is affiliated with Virginia AARP in Richmond, Virginia. Chapter governance is guided by Bylaws consistent with the Chapter Handbook published by national AARP.

The primary focus of Blacksburg AARP is education of seniors in the various communities of Blacksburg and cities and towns in the New River Valley. The educational mission of the chapter generally focuses on health and wellness of seniors and promotes the concept of LivingWell@50+

The chapter also is active in supporting Virginia AARP legislative agendas and seeks through the influence of its members to promote legislative action at the local, state, and national levels relating to the general welfare of seniors. These activities are conducted in a non-partisan manner. The chapter advocates for AARP priorities, but without affiliation with any political party.

Membership in Blacksburg AARP is open to all who are 50 or more years old. Affiliate membership is available to interested citizens who are less than 50 years old.
