BLACKSBURG JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB – DBI NON-PROFIT MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is proud to present our non-profit Member of the Month for April 2017 – Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club!

The Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club was formed in November, 1935 by a small group of local ladies who wanted to give back to their community, as well as strengthen social ties. Our club became a member of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs in February 1936 and has been honored with awards for its service by the national organization multiple times in the years since then.

At its beginning, the Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club had just 13 members. Today, our membership has grown to over 40 members with varying degrees of involvement in more than 30 service projects in the broader New River Valley. Each year, we focus a larger proportion of our time and financial resources on a few core projects to maximize our impact in the community. Those core projects include the Women’s Resource Center’s “Adopt-an-Apartment program, the Montgomery County Christmas Store’s Diaper Drive, Ronald McDonald House, Last Minute Angels, and the Polar Plunge benefiting Virginia Special Olympics. By focusing our efforts in these areas, we are able to effect significant improvement in the lives of some of our area’s most under served populations.

The key to our growing success over the past 10 years has been our annual March of Ales fundraiser. Through generous donations from local businesses and members of the community, March of Ales raises enough money to continue our work the following year. Through live and silent auctions, raffle tickets, and beverage sales, we raised over $20,000.00 at this year’s event. This money will be put directly back into our community through service work and donations during the 2017-2018 program year. We are humbled by our community’s generosity and consider it a great honor to be entrusted with such resources.

We’d love to have you!
