Downtown Blacksburg, Inc is proud to present our Business Member of the Month for January 2017-Greenhouse Boardshop.
Originally founded in the Roanoke Valley in the 1980’s, Greenhouse Boardshop opened its doors in downtown Blacksburg in 1993 with the concept of being a full-service skateboard and snowboard shop that also offered a unique selection of west-coast inspired clothing and footwear. Co-owners and brothers Lee and Daniel Johnson (a VT alumni)
loved the Blacksburg community and decided to roll the dice on something that many thought would be a long shot.
Challenges for the shop would soon follow, as Blacksburg town council banned skateboarding in the downtown area, alongside steadily growing competition from the big corporate online marketplace. Greenhouse remained true to its roots and focused on providing friendly and professional customer service, and this helped maintain a loyal following of customers. The shop also began working with several municipalities in southwest Virginia to help construct free public skateboard parks. Most notable among these was the partnership between the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation department and Greenhouse that created the Blacksburg skate park.
Aside from skateboarding and snowboarding equipment, rentals, and outerwear, Greenhouse also offers Vans and Nike SB footwear, Rainbow and Sanuk sandals, Stance socks, and a variety of smaller fashion-forward clothing brands and accessory items, including their own brand of locally designed and printed Greenhouse apparel. They also offer custom printed t-shirts and clothing for other businesses and organizations at an affordable price and a quick turnaround.
So, the next time you are downtown visiting one of the many excellent restaurants and specialty retail shops, stop in and check out Greenhouse. They would love to see you!
