Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. is proud to present our Non-Profit Member of the Month for August 2016-The Artful Lawyer, A Fine Gallery Inc.
When The Creekmore Law Firm moved to its new location on Main Street in September 2011, we recognized a unique opportunity to not only expand our business practice but to become a part of Blacksburg’s Creative Village. After a few months of gathering hanging materials, pulling art contacts together, creating a library space for Harding Avenue Elementary’s art, and becoming a Merchant Partner with the Blacksburg Regional Art Association, we debuted our first art exhibit in December of 2011 to a gathering of nearly 150 clients and friends. We formed our not-for-profit gallery, The Artful Lawyer, A Fine Gallery Inc. in 2012 and continued our art parties, now dubbed Whet Your Palette receptions. Since that first art reception, our walls have become an ever-changing canvas to our local artists’ imaginations–adults and children alike–and our halls have been filled by an ever-changing mix of friends, neighbors, clients and art patrons from all around. We’ve expanded our children’s gallery to include Blacksburg Middle School and Gilbert Linkous Elementary School and welcome more. Indeed, we are dedicated to providing such a space as long as the creativity flows.
But more than an exhibition space, the Gallery offers diverse programs ranging from artist talks to our monthly Art & Law symposium, that draws on the strengths of the Law Firm to address various legal and business related issues for artists, particularly including the intellectual property rights attendant to the works they create. We happily engage with any artist group or guild anywhere in Virginia who is interested in hearing more about intellectual property rights or business law as it pertains to their particular artistic field of endeavor.
Under the Artful Lawyer umbrella are two projects, The Artful Place, A Fine Studio and The Gallery Store.
In late 2012, a great number of New River Valley artists gathered for a critical exchange of ideas, needs, goals and desires, and what emerged was a resounding interest in an affordable, collaborative, creative environment within which artists could work together, exchange ideas and promote on another’s work. Within weeks, our old office location at the corner of Faculty and Progress Streets in the heart of the newly minted Arts Overlay District of Blacksburg was transformed into just such a collaborative working studio environment for artists. With that, The Artful Place, A Fine Studio was born as a Studio Project of The Artful Lawyer, A Fine Gallery Inc. The Artful Place currently claims 15 artists in residence. At The Artful Place, emerging and well-established artists alike work side by side, collaborating and creating in an artfully inspired and thought-stimulating environment.
The Artful Place hosts monthly Paint Parties and Figure Drawing classes. Registration for all events is available online at our Calendar of Events . Though we have scheduled Paint Parties, private parties may be scheduled as well – either at our place or offsite! We look to see what themes others come up with to paint! Other studio artists hold workshops, classes or special events from time to time, so always check back with us on our Calendar and keep up to date on our social media platforms as well!
The Gallery Store, adjacent to The Gallery is the proud home to local vendors who sell a variety of original art, jewelry, candles, stained glass, cards, knitwear, tea, baby clothes and books.
The Artful Lawyer also holds two signature events per year for clients, friends, artists, and the community at large, Blacksburg en Blanc in the summer and New River en Noir in the winter.
Blacksburg en Blanc is a Blacksburg en Blanc builds on the tradition started in Paris 27 years ago by François Pasquier who invited a few friends to the Bois de Boulogne one day in June for an impromptu picnic. To find each other quickly in the park, they all wore white. The dinner was such a success that they decided that the next year each person would invite new friends. Over the years, and throughout many countries, this impromptu picnic has become an annual tradition, with over 11,000 people attending in the bigger cities. Friends gather together, dressed in white, for a spontaneous night out — for the location is not disclosed until the morning of the event! In our small town, attendance is slightly smaller but just as fun!
New River en Noir builds on our popular Blacksburg en Blanc, with a holiday twist. Like Blacksburg en Blanc, the venue is a surprise. Like Blacksburg en Blanc, the attire is set. Unlike Blacksburg en Blanc, however, you need not bring anything but your holiday spirit and your dancing shoes! We provide your transportation, your meal, and your entertainment. Registration HERE!
In 2014, The Artful Lawyer, A Fine Gallery Inc. was honored by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce as its Outstanding New Member of the Year.
