Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. is proud to present our Non-Profit Member of the Month for May 2016-Habitat for Humanity.
This is Bob B. who is 80 years old and volunteers in the ReStore, full time. He has developed a wood working shop in the store where he utilizes donated parts and materials to build interesting furniture, shelves, toys and other things that we can sell. In fact, this summer the ReStore will have a booth at Steppin’ Out selling many of the things Bob built. He built custom log homes as his trade and fortunately for us he wants to serve our community in this way. He made some many beautiful things that last year, he was one of our top donors after they sold!
He enjoys teaching others who would like to learn to use wood working tools and make interesting and useful things.
Habitat builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
Habitat works to eliminate barriers to a better, healthier, more financially stable life. With our help, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better future for themselves and their families.
Our core values
- Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.
- Decent shelter is something we all need to thrive.
- With a little help, we all have the potential to stand on our own.
- Bold actions speak louder than words.
- Working together, side by side, promotes understanding and self-reliance.
Our primary fundraiser receives donations of furniture, appliances, and all types of home improvement and construction material. We sell those donations to the public at our warehouse located at 1675 N Franklin St in Christiansburg. Shoppers range from crafters to builders, homeowners to rental property managers. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10-6pm. We welcome volunteers and volunteer groups to assist in the process.
Our 30 Second Story
We partner with everyone to build or improve a place that can be called home. Habitat for Humanity builds homes and communities by focusing on 3 attributes:
A Habitat home is a strong foundation for a family, an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.
A Habitat home is a stabilizing force for a family. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability and financial flexibility to make forward looking choices.
Through shelter, we empower. A decent place to live and an affordable mortgage help homeowners save more, invest in education, pursue opportunity and have more financial stability.
Your financial support, your time and your voice will help bring independence to families in need of a decent place to live.
Your donation never stops giving. We use your dollar to build affordable homes and the homebuyer pays it back through their mortgage so we can build again, completing the cycle of giving.
